Tapioca is a flashcard app built around the Home Screen. Its widget shows one card at a time: tap to reveal the answer, tap to grade it, and the next card appears without the app opening. Tapioca schedules every card with spaced repetition, so each review lands when it does the most good.

1. Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
3. Search for Tapioca and choose Review.
4. Pick the medium or large size and tap Add Widget.

For a count of what’s due on your Lock Screen, add the Cards Due widget there the same way.

Tapioca is designed for iPhone and needs iOS 26 or later.

Yes. The app has a full review screen with undo and haptics, alongside stats, reminders and the card editor.

Tapioca uses FSRS-6, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm, with learning steps for new and forgotten cards. Each card is timed to return right when you’d start to forget it, and every grade button shows the interval it grants before you tap. With enough review history, Tapioca can refit the scheduler to your own memory, and keeps that fit only when it predicts your reviews better than the defaults.

Again means you didn’t remember it. Hard means you got there with effort. Good means you remembered it. Easy means you knew it instantly. Be honest: the scheduler works best when grades reflect what really happened.

• Text: a prompt and an answer.
• Cloze: a passage with words hidden in it. Anki’s {{c1::…}} markers work too.
• Picture: a photo with a caption, answered in words.
• Blur: parts of a photo or diagram hidden until you reveal them.

You can also turn any deck around so it’s asked both ways.

Only if you want them. Reminders are optional and never requested on first launch. When turned on, they’re built from what’s actually due, plus an evening nudge only when a streak is at risk.

Name a topic, paste notes or a transcript, photograph a page, or pick a PDF. Tapioca writes cards from it and shows them as they arrive, so you can drop the ones you don’t want before anything is saved. Cards from a PDF note the page they came from.

The first time, Tapioca asks before sending anything. What you choose goes to the Tapioca server and on to Anthropic’s Claude, which writes the cards. Tapioca doesn’t keep your content. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days and doesn’t train its models on it.

Photos are read on your iPhone; only the recognised words are sent, never the picture. Importing a file sends a short sample of it too, to check the cards came out right. The full details are in our privacy policy.

AI card writing is included in Tapioca Pro within a monthly fair-use allowance. If you reach it, Tapioca tells you, and the allowance renews at the start of the next month. Everything else in Tapioca keeps working as normal.

Open the Profile tab, tap Settings, and under Writing cards with AI tap Withdraw permission. Tapioca will ask again before sending anything in future.

No, it needs an internet connection. Reviewing, writing cards by hand, importing and the catalogue decks you’ve already added all work offline. Offline, an import just skips the check described under importing.

Anki (.apkg and .colpkg), Quizlet, Mochi, AlgoApp, Mnemosyne, SuperMemo, Obsidian and CSV. Tapioca shows you what it read before anything is added.

Tapioca reads the file on your iPhone and makes the cards there. It then sends a short sample of the text it read to the Tapioca server and on to Anthropic, which says whether the cards came out right. If they didn’t, Tapioca sends the text of that list so the layout can be worked out and the corrected cards sent back.

So the text of a list can leave your iPhone on an import, and Tapioca asks your permission before any of this happens. Pictures and audio from Anki packages never leave the device. Tapioca keeps none of it, and Anthropic deletes it within 30 days. The check uses the same permission as AI card writing: if you haven’t given it, or you’re offline, the import still works.

Yes. Anki imports bring pictures, image occlusion and review history, so your cards keep their place in the schedule.

Tapioca includes 100 decks with 2,500 cards across ten subjects: languages, geography, history, science, space, art and music, maths, technology, literature and everyday knowledge. Add one in a tap from the Explore tab. Decks with pictures download them when you add the deck, and Tapioca shows the size first.

There’s no account. Your decks, cards and history are stored on your iPhone, and a copy is kept in your own iCloud Drive automatically. You can turn the iCloud copy off from the Backup page in the Profile tab.

Sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Drive on, install Tapioca, and it will offer to restore from iCloud. You can also restore from a backup file on the Backup page. To bring your subscription across, tap Restore purchase in Settings.

Yes, at any time. Export every card as CSV, or back up everything to a single file you can keep or restore later.

In Profile › Settings, tap Erase all data. Every deck, card and review on your iPhone is deleted permanently, along with what the Tapioca server holds for your phone. Your subscription isn’t affected. Files you exported, and backups in your iCloud Drive, stay under your control. You can delete those from the Files app or your iCloud storage settings.

Tapioca is a subscription app. Tapioca Pro is the whole app: every deck and card, every kind of card, every widget, the full scheduler, AI card writing, reverse cards and iCloud backup. There’s no free tier and no trial. Prices for your country are shown in the app and on the App Store before you buy.

Subscriptions are managed by Apple. In Tapioca, go to Profile › Settings › Manage subscription, or on your iPhone open Settings › your name › Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period to avoid renewing. Apple’s guide has more detail.

Apple handles all payments and refunds. You can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Make sure you’re signed in to the App Store with the Apple Account you subscribed with, then tap Restore purchase in Profile › Settings. If that doesn’t work, contact us.

Everything you made stays on your iPhone and can be exported at any time. Subscribe again and you pick up right where you left off.
